Tell us about your role at Telstra International.

I lead the global product team; we’re responsible for product development and product management of Telstra’s suite of global products. This includes product strategy, requirements definition, development/implementation, lifecycle management and partner integration. We have a ‘virtual’ team that operates on four continents, which means we can take advantage of time zones, unique skills and regional experience.

What are the key challenges you currently face?

In the global telecoms market, the key challenge is often about finding new ways to innovate and differentiate our products. At the moment, customers are still feeling the effects of the global financial crisis and budgets have tightened. ‘Optimisation’ is a word we’re hearing a lot as customers are looking to get more from their existing network infrastructure. So, with customers demanding better functionality and performance from their networks, we are very focused on delivering specialised solutions that will help them achieve this.

How do Telstra International’s challenges differ to those of Telstra as the incumbent in Australia?

As an Asian specialist, Telstra International is operating in one of the most dynamic and fastest growing markets in the world – with an intense rate of change in terms of technology, competitors and offerings. Our customers expect and receive consistent, high quality service in the mature and developed markets, as well as in emerging parts of the region.

As such, we are constantly working to improve access technologies, cable diversity and performance throughout the region, for example, the new Asia Americas Gateway cable system which offers the lowest latency path from Hong Kong to North America.

What do you think will have the biggest impact on the industry in the next year?

One key challenge for Telstra will be the rate of adoption and implementation of cloud computing and a virtualized environment for many of our large multinational customers.  Most of our large customers are working toward virtualisation, as they recognise the economic benefits.  However, this trend varies by industry and region and leads to increased expectations on the performance of the network, including diversity and availability.

It’s Telstra’s desire to go on the journey with our customers, from being their network supplier and provider of data centre services to offering a full suite of cloud-based services in our hosting centres around the world.  Telstra has proven experience in offering these services since 2002 and we’ll continue to grow the portfolio to meet the needs of our customers.

We’re hearing more and more about VPLS and Ethernet services: tell us your views.

Ethernet services are driving significant market growth in Asia today, with growth rates at 18%. As an Asian specialist, Telstra offers a full set of Ethernet-based network services including Ethernet Private Line, Ethernet Virtual Private Line and VPLS. We’re now a leading supplier in Ethernet services, not only in Asia Pacific but in Europe too, and we’ll continue to expand our coverage.

Ethernet services allow our customers to continue to reduce hardware and network costs, whilst driving increased functionality and performance out of their networks –linking back to the demand for optimisation which I mentioned earlier. They provide the building blocks to create secure, low latency networks appropriate for distribution of financial services, media and content.
