Telstra hosts VIP customers at the region’s premier international club tournament.
The weekend of November 6th welcomed more than 5,000 spectators to enjoy the thrills and spills of the region’s premier international club rugby tournament. Hosted at the Singapore Padang facility, featuring a pitch that has given foundation to rugby matches as far back as 1880, the SCC Rugby 7s is regarded as one of the world’s oldest matches making its debut back in 1947. Telstra International was delighted to be a proud sponsor and to have had the opportunity to thank long standing customers by extending a VIP invitation to watch the weekends events unfold from the comfort of a dedicated corporate box.
Proceedings commenced in earnest with twenty-four under-16 and under-18 teams competing at the main event, after an absence of fifteen years. With the pace set, the first ever women’s matches were then played out with Kazakhstan becoming the final Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 qualifiers after an emphatic 43-5 defeat of Japan. The South African Vipers finally closed proceedings, charging their way to victory and dispatching the Fijian Davetalevu to claim their third win in a row by collecting the 2009 Ablitt Silver Cup.
Known as the “Friendly Sevens”, additional fun and frolicks were served up in a medley of local bands striking up tunes to get fans and athletes in a party mood, with a children’s play area set up to let the little ones blow off almost as much steam as the players. An additional first in the event's history included a weekend long Arts & Crafts Fair in a traditional Singapore shophouse, with well over 50 vendors ensuring there was something for everyone, making this a truly delightful event.
